The first Super Bowl was held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California on Jan. 15, 1967. For Super Bowl XV, The Raiders’ Tom Flores, who is of Hispanic descent, became the first minority coach to win the game. In 2007, Tony Dungy became the first Black coach to win the Super Bowl. The Indianapolis Colts coach competed against his friend and protégé Lovie Smith, head coach of the Chicago Bears, making them the first two Black coaches to lead the game.

Super Bowl 51 is set to be hosted on Feb. 5, 2017 at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas. It has been almost 12 years since the last Super Bowl was held in Houston.

Super Bowl 50 was a season to remember. The Denver Broncos won Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers and Peyton Manning retiring shortly after the game. The Carolina Panthers dramatically improved after having an average season in 2014. It was a transformation that no one saw coming and that’s what made their run to the big game so exciting.

Sometimes that’s what the Super Bowl consists of, one team who was not expected to make such a dramatic change from being one of the worst to one of the best teams in the league and reach the game. There has not been one Super Bowl where a dominant team in the league has made an appearance to the game. Before we were used to seeing the San Francisco 49ers make their mark as one of the greatest teams to win the Super Bowl. As a matter of fact, the Super Bowl has managed to defy a team’s reputation due to how many times they have won and lost the big game. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Dallas Cowboys have made their fair share of Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s and created their own success in those games. Who can forget the 1973 Miami Dolphins as the only team to finish the entire season undefeated and winning the Super Bowl?

Not only does the Super Bowl defy teams, but some of the greatest players in the NFL have made a name for themselves after being a part of the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl creates memories for teams to reminisce about, no matter what the outcome turns out to be. The history of the Super Bowl has consisted of interesting events that occurred in the big game.

For example, Super Bowl XLVII (47) which was played in New Orleans at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31. Beyoncé was the half-time performer and there was power failure at the Super Dome which halted the game, and left half of the stadium in the dark for 34 minutes.

Super Bowl 50 was the third most watched broadcast in U.S. television history, with an average viewership of 111.9 million. Super Bowl XLIX (49) was considered the most watched U.S. telecast of all time, with an average viewership of 114.4 million. Super Bowl XLVIII (48) had the second largest viewership with an average audience of 112.2 million. January 28, 1990 consisted of the highest scoring winner - San Francisco 49ers, 55, Denver Broncos, 10 in Super Bowl XXIV, at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. This was also the largest margin of victory to date.

Super Bowl 51 gives any team in the league a chance to reach the big game. The players who came out of the NFL draft this April gave many unsuccessful teams a reason to believe this might be their year.
There are numerous teams who have the potential to win the Super Bowl and others who might make an appearance after being absent from the big game for quite some time. Could the next Super Bowl consist of the top two elite teams battling it out or will we find ourselves seeing an underdog pull off an upset over the best team in the league?

2017 is the 14th consecutive year in which the Super Bowl is held in February. NRG Stadium holds a maximum capacity of 71,500, and it will be difficult for fans to grab one of those seats. The largest percentage of Super Bowl tickets goes to the two teams in the contest, as each gets 17.5 percent. Because the Texans are hosting the game in 2017, they’ll receive five percent of the tickets. The other 29 NFL teams get 1.2 percent of the seats, and the organizations hold lotteries of their own amongst season-ticket holders. The NFL league office takes the final 25.2 percent of the tickets. Houston has not disappointed in the past as far as how the first time they hosted the Super Bowl resulted in. The city can only hope for two teams to create an exciting game for the fans all over the world to watch and enjoy.
