The events center was primarily founded with a specific aim. It was built to feature as the home of the men's and women's Longhorn basketball team and replace Gregory Gym. The facility was named after Frank Erwin (a member of UT Board of Regents).
Renovations and Expansions
The basic construction of Frank Erwin Events Center was completed in 1977 and it was worth about $34 million. In the following time period (2001 - 2003), the facility had witnessed a multitude of renovations and expansions. An amount of $55 million was further invested in order to remodel and revamp the core facilities of this popular Austin events center. The renovation construction work included life safety upgrades, an addition of 28 elite suites, reception hall renovations, and more.
The renovation project also introduced better restroom facilities and new concession stands. These amenities were renovated in order to offer the visitors and spectators a superior live entertainment experience. Additional inclusions (as part of the renovation construction) are the addition of a new scoreboard, indoor electronic video signs, new lighting, renovated seating, and new sound systems.
Layout and Seating Capacity
The events center features a superior and well-equipped two-level layout, for example, the upper mezzanine area and the lower arena. It can easily accommodate a total of 16,540 spectators for all basketball games. Whereas, for concerts and other forms of live performances, Frank Erwin Events Center offers a seating capacity of 17,900 spectators.
The inner ring of the lower arena is around twenty rows deep. Likewise, the inner ring of the mezzanine area is around twenty-four rows deep.
