Possibly one of the most controversial owners in sports is Jerral Wayne Jones Sr., otherwise known as the infamous Jerry Jones. The owner of the Dallas Cowboys is a three time Superbowl winner. He is worth about 5 billion dollars.
Jerry Jones was born in Los Angeles, California then later moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas. While there, he played as a running back on North Little Rock High School. During his time at the University of Arkansas, he was a member of Kappa Sigma and the co-captain of the 1964 National Championship Football Team. Jerry Jones played with many future hall-of-famers and football coaches during his time on the field. He is often known as one of the few NFL owners who found success playing football. After all, owning a team and playing on one require many different, unrelated skills.
Jerry Jones did not find immediate success after college. After graduation, Jerry Jones took out a loan to open up a string of Shakey Pizza Parlor restaurants. Unfortunately, these ultimately ended up as a failure.
After that business misstep, the future Dallas Cowboys owner then went to work at his father’s insurance company. During the time there, he got his master’s degree in business. Using his newly-gained knowledge and qualifications, he tried again a series of business ventures, including buying the San Diego Chargers. He finally became successful when he started the Jones Oil and Land Lease. This was the start of his rise as a tycoon. The funds he gained from this venture allowed him to ability to buy the Dallas Cowboys.
On February 25, 1989, Jerry Jones purchased the Dallas Cowboys for $140 million. He immediately fired Tom Landry, who had been a coach for years. Instead, he brought on board Jimmy Johnson. Shortly after that, Jerry Jones fired Ted Schramm and took charge as General Manager. This led to a Superbowl win in 1992 and 1993, along with another win in 1995.
Jerry Jones is often considered the worst owner in football history. In 2003, he won least favorite sports personality. The Dallas Cowboys are considered the one of the most valuable leagues but win record frequently laid at Jerry Jones’ feet.
Jerry Jones had also received harsh criticism for his paycheck over the years. He has earned some of the highest paychecks in the league. Because of this, his love of sports has come under question. Instead of being involved due to a love of the game, it’s frequently thought that he is in it for the paycheck. He played a business role in the plan the San Diego Chargers, Oakland Raiders, and moving the LA Rams to where they are now. His business mindset helped the deal go through but a harsh attack was given to him by the fans of St Louis.
