The San Antonio Spurs are part of the National Basketball Association (NBA), a league that features the best of the best in the world of basketball. The Spurs organization was founded in 1967 and joined the NBA in 1976. They were originally known as the Dallas Chaparrals and underwent several name changes before settling on the San Antonio Spurs in 1973. The Spurs have had two of the best big men to ever play the game in David Robinson and Tim Duncan. San Antonio enjoyed regular season success aplenty in the 1970s and early 1980s behind stars such as George Gervin, Larry Kenon, James Silas and Artis Gilmore, but ran into the Washington Bullets in the Eastern Conference in the 1970s and the Los Angeles Lakers in the early ‘80s out West. The Spurs bottomed out in the middle of the 1980s and drafted Navy star David Robinson first overall in 1987, opting to wait two years for him to fulfill his military obligation. Robinson’s arrival launched a new era of success for the Spurs, save for a 20-win season in 1996-97 when Robinson was out with a back injury most of the year. That led, however, to the drafting of franchise icon Tim Duncan with the first pick in 1997 and San Antonio hasn’t missed the postseason since.
The Spurs won titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. Coach Gregg Popovich, who served as the Spurs general manager from May 1994 through July 2002, took over as head coach 18 games into the disastrous 1996-97 season and has gone 1,078-480 in the regular season and 152-94 in the playoffs since.
The Spurs always look forward to playing the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Thunder fell to the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals a few years ago, and Oklahoma City will surely be motivated every time they hit the court at the AT&T Center this season. The Thunder have two of the top and most dynamic players in the NBA in Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, and the overall athleticism of OKC often gives the Spurs some trouble. Over the years the two teams have played each other 163 times with the Spurs winning 90 times and the Thunder winning 73 times. They have played 34 play off games and Spurs have won 19 of those.
Before this small rivalry began, OKC was originally known as the Seattle SuperSonics, and relocated to Oklahoma City in 2008. The move was made only after the resolution of a lawsuit brought by the city of Seattle, which resulted in its retaining the rights to the Sonics’ name and history in the event that another NBA franchise begins play in the city. These matchups should be great to see in person this season, and you can be there in the stands. The Spurs will take on a big rival when the Dallas Mavericks visit this season. Professional basketball returned to Dallas in 1980 with the arrival of the city’s first NBA franchise, the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks also call the Southwest Division home, and these two clubs have had some amazing games over the years. Their rivalry began in 1980, when the Mavericks joined the NBA as an expansion team. The rivalry intensified in the 2001 NBA Playoffs. The Spurs defeated the Mavericks in five games in the Western Conference Semifinals that year. Moving forward, the Spurs blew Dallas out 119-96 in Game 7 to win the series and would go on to win the 2014 NBA Championship. Dallas will be tough to stop, but if any team can make it happen it's the Spurs.
Another division rival that will be a challenge this season is the Houston Rockets, who reached the Conference Finals in 2015. The Houston Rockets trace their roots back to the NBA’s 1967 expansion, as the San Diego Rockets joined the league along with the Seattle SuperSonics. The rivalry between the Rockets and Spurs started in 1976, when the Spurs moved from the ABA as a result of the merger. Both teams faced off in the 1980 playoffs. It is also known as the I-10 Rivalry, since both Houston and San Antonio lie on Interstate 10. Don't miss out on this match-up or any of the others on the loaded home schedule. For the ongoing 2016-17 NBA season these two teams are again competing for the top spot in Southwest Division with Spurs holding a narrow lead over the Rockets.
