About Arena

The AT&T Center was built in 2002 and is a hub for sports, concerts and events in San Antonio, Texas. Before the construction of the facility, the San Antonio Spurs used to play at the Alamodome, which was a relatively new multi-purpose facility. The Alamodome was constructed with the Spurs and their fans’ needs in mind but, over time, areas needing improvement became apparent. The Spurs’ needs resulted in scheduling difficulties for another venue. Originally, there were plans to construct a new facility next to the Alamodome. However, construction was moved next to the Freeman Coliseum due to a deal with Bexar County. In a funny coincidence, the Spurs got their first NBA Championship rings on the same day Bexar County voters approved the SBC Center’s plan. SBC Center opened in 2002 and officially changed its name to the AT&T Center in January 2006. Spurs Sports and Entertainment received permission from the Bexar County Commissioners Court to do $101.5 million in renovations in December 2014.
