Owned and operated by the L.A. Arena Company and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), the STAPLES Center opened in October 1999. It is named for one of its private financial backers, the Staples, Inc., a office-supply company. Its opening was celebrated with a performance by Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.
In the beginning, the STAPLES Center was the home of the Lakers, the Clippers and the Kings. The Sparks joined in 2001 and the NBA D-League’s D-Fenders joined in 2006. The AFL’s Avengers joined in 2000 and remained until they were discontinued in 2008.
Remaining environmentally conscious is important to the STAPLES Center. There are 1,727 solar panels on the rooftop of the STAPLES Center, which were installed by Solar Panel Inc. in 2008. All cleaning products used at the STAPLES Center are green sealed certified. It encourages public transportation by offering ticket packages in conjunction with Metro. A new LED sports lighting system was installed in the summer 2014 and the STAPLES Center has partnered with Waste Management and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Bureau of Sanitation to continually improve its recycling policies.
The STAPLES Center Foundation is a charitable foundation that serves the youth in the Greater Los Angeles Area, especially those in the low income neighborhoods around the arena. During the holiday season, the STAPLES Center and L.A. LIVE encourages employee volunteerism with activities like its Day of Service. Local public schools have been refurbished and, throughout December, 25 local charities are given the spotlight by the STAPLES Center Foundation. They hold blood drives, collect food, and register volunteers.
